Open Letter to the GOP
Dear GOP Leaders and Candidates:
Due to the unconscionable arrogance and failures of the Democrats upon controlling the White House and both houses of Congress, control given to them by the incredible failures of the GOP when it held a similar position, it appears the GOP may once again regain control of the House and the Senate in November. All the polling data and the mounting anger of the American people at being ignored by their government may well sweep you back into power in the legislature.
But understand this:
This is not a remarriage between you and the conservative and moderate base of this nation. It is only a trial courtship. You betrayed our trust completely over the years leading up to your ouster in 2006 from control of Congress, and we have not forgotten. But you have forgotten. To prove you’ve forgotten, we need only point to the still too large number of RINO’s (Republicans In Name Only) that are still being offered to us as the answer to our problems as a nation.
We are not stupid. We see these RINO’s as nothing more than progressives with an “R” behind their name. We may hold our noses and vote for them as the lesser of two evils, but even the lesser of two evils is still by definition evil.
We are not interested in a different vision of government control from the Democrats’ version. We want the original vision of government as set forth by our Founders.
We are not interested in the past policies of the GOP. We are demanding a new direction. We are demanding a return to a smaller government which knows and obeys its limits under the Constitution.
We do not want to hear how you’ll fix the Democrat health care plan by improving it. We don’t want to hear how you’ll pass legislation to fix it. We want it abolished. Health care is neither a right guaranteed by the Constitution, nor is it within the purview of Article I, Section 8. In case you’ve forgotten what the Constitution says, we’re providing you a link. We suggest you read it and learn about your limits.
We aren’t interested in how you’ll spend our tax money to promote jobs and growth. Again, that is not one of your enumerated powers. In fact, we want you to simply get out of the way. Our economy is like a thoroughbred race horse with a 300-pound jockey on her back, a jockey going through the drive-thru of a fast food restaurant and supersizing the order yet again. Cut the taxes and let the people decide who wins and loses in the open market place.
In fact, there is absolutely no reason for the federal tax code to be in excess of 60,000 pages. End the practice of social and economic engineering through the tax code. Pass a fair or flat tax and be done with it. This alone will eliminate several government agencies and trim the size of government. The IRS has been used long enough as a terror weapon against the sovereign people of these United States. We’ve had enough.
End the practice of providing military defense to the rest of the world at our expense. We’re broke. Close down our foreign bases and bring the troops home where they can actually do their job of defending our borders.
Yes, those pesky borders. We aren’t interested in “comprehensive immigration reform.” The law is clear. You either entered this country legally or you did not. If you did not, you have no place in our society which supposedly respects the rule of law. Close the borders and defend them from invasion. Penalize any business found to be hiring illegal immigrants. Deport all those found within these United States that are here illegally. And this includes their “anchor babies.” These children have committed no wrong, but for them to remain in the country requires that we reward the wrong of their parents. Let them go home with their parents. If they wish to return to the United States, when they are capable of supporting themselves, they can be readmitted at that time. We are broke. We can’t afford any more non-producers and people working off the books, using government services to which they provide no contribution in kind from taxes paid. We’re broke.
End the practice of trying to buy friendship around the world through foreign aid. Again, you guessed it, we’re broke. Besides, buying friends has not worked out very well for us anyway. If a true humanitarian crisis arises, then by all means, we can respond, but there is no reason to be supporting corrupt foreign heads of state with the hard earned treasure of Americans.
End the practice of buying votes for yourselves with our treasure. If the people of a state want something, they can pay for it with state revenues. And if you’ll stop sucking up all of our money in federal taxes, we will be able to enact programs locally, where they can be run and overseen locally, not from your Washington ivory tower.
For your first term, if you want a second term, we suggest you focus all of your energies on ending all federal government programs which do not fall under your purview under the Constitution. If you cannot get legislation past President Obama to end a program, you do control the power of the purse in the House of Representatives under Article I, Section 7, of the Constitution. Defund all programs that are not properly constituted. We’re broke. Stop mortgaging our kids’ futures for current wants.
Not even the US government is too big to fail, and it is indeed on a path to complete and total financial destruction if radical changes are not made and made quickly.
And if you really want to earn our trust, audit the Federal Reserve and give us a full, transparent accounting of what is going on behind those closed doors for about 100 years. There are rumors that trillions of dollars have simply gone into a black hole there. We want to know if these rumors are true, and if so, we want those responsible held accountable, not just by calling them out, but by sending any and all individuals involved to prison for very long terms and confiscating their personal wealth, the same way we treat the other cheats of this world, like Bernie Madoff.
On the subject of trust, we also want you to look into and explain how a person can go into Congress for a few terms at a job worth about $140,000 a year and retire as a millionaire, with a full pension of their congressional salary. End the retirement benefits. Your service is a privilege. You should not be rewarded with a life time of income for this service. Let a person serve a couple of terms and then return home. There will be no need for term limits if we simply do not continue to reward longevity in Congress. Any past member of Congress found to have enriched themselves and/or family and friends from the public treasury should be tried and all their wealth forfeited as partial recompense for their misdeeds.
You are being given a chance to redeem yourselves.
The urge to say “pox on both your houses” and form a new, third party in this nation is very strong.
Your survival as a party is on the line.
This may be your last chance.
We suggest you don’t squander it.
WE THE PEOPLE

I agree with every word of this article. A Free American, Susan Weinstein
Excellent article! i have been trying to enlighten the GOP about the fact that Rinos will no longer be tolerated. and the list is longer than we realize here. A short list has to include, McCain, Graham, Snowe, Collins,Crist ( ex-GOP) and about half the Governors in the Union! (*Calif comes to mind here.) Scott Brown has a hell of a lot of repairing to do right now too, we are watching his Rino/ liberal socialistic tendacies and dont like what we see. You need to give more credit to the ONLY real up and comer in your party, Ryan from Wisc. He goes to battle for this nation and gets only a luke warm reception from the OlD Guard of the GOP. That is unacceptable, show him the support and respect he has earned in a very short time! jeff Flake is another rep deserving of some respect for trying to stop the corruption that is known as pigface earmarks today. You can’t exdpect this nation’s support if you ignore these true, young fighting patriots who happen to represent the GOP as we want it! Scratch that, the GOP we demand or will replace if it isn’t corrected!
It always comes down to the money. We will be watching this Nov, if you dont have the guts to ban those above-named Rinos, cut the access to GOP election funding at least. Let the Democrats pay their way since the turncoats vote liberal 99% of the time. Nothing like paying to elect Rinos that serve the enemy!
Clear enough? Thank you Greg, for putting this information for all to see, the same warning I have been trying to send the GOP for over a year now.
To you, Greg, I say ” hear, hear ! “. To the GOP I say, “HEAR, PLEASE HEAR!”
Powerfully articulated, Greg.
I would add that there should be caps on the amount of money for legislative offices: including salaries for aids & number of aids.
I would also add that bills are to be written by legislators & not by think tanks, special interest groups, or lobbyists. All of the bills should be limited in size, written in a language that is understandable to high school graduates, & read & understood by each & every legislator before it is voted upon.
Bills should not be written as cover for earmark/pork barrel spending nor to give cover to legislation that would not pass except as blackmail (buried in a popular or essential bill)
Sorry, Greg. I got carried away.
Mike
Great comments, Mike. That’s the whole purpose is to add to the discussion, and you certainly did.
Amen to all this Greg! We the People have no problem with spending money or the fact that our representaion MAKES money…its the over spending and the cheating we are tired of!
Excellent commentary. This is exactly what I have been shouting since 1998 when the 94 GOP takeover sputtered and failed. My wallet is empty, Obama has yanked the gold from my teeth and now the GOP wants to stick their claws into me.
GOP victroies in 2010 will bring about little different. Can we say Scott Brown – Puke. Here is in Kansas the 3rd Distict GOPer will turn into another Scott Brown if elected.
For the Senate, my opponent Jerry Moran was part of the GOP takeover in 94-96. Not a single piece of defining legislation but the dumbos in the GOP want him to join the big boy’s table. Due paid, privileges earned and the little to screw over again and again.
The debt has nearly tripled since the GOP takeover in 94. Not a single federal department eliminated since that time. Every day freedoma nd liberty wane.
Joe, As a resident of Kansas, I agree about Jerry Moran. He is a RINO, along with Tiahrt. They pander to special interests and here is just one vote, or lack of, regarding hr3534: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/vote.xpd?vote=h2010-513
I would love to see them both lose their jobs. The problem is that, this year, they have already won the primary and their opponents are worse than they are.
There must be a way to hold representatives accountable in between election periods. If not we need to find a way. Violence would not be acceptable, but I don’t see any viable alternative to bring them down, other than impeachment, which is not trivial to do.
Great post! I quoted and linked your article.
Well written Greg! I agree with and support your statements here. If the GOP representatives, elected this November, do not support and vote the way their constituents demand — there will be hell to pay. Physical confrontation is not out of the question, and losing their new position is a virtual certainty.
As you state so well above, America is PISSED OFF! Candidates, and new representatives, do the right thing or be held accountable.
[...] Greg W. Howard writes as eloquent a letter, with specific warning to the GOP as I’ve read. Beginning November 3 we should follow suit and pen our own letters to our own representatives at all levels of government. [...]
if the GOP does not listen to us we have the power to do unto them as we done unto the Democrats on 11-2
Excellent letter, Greg. There was only one small aspect I didn’t wholly agree with, but that’s minor considering I agree with the whole. You’re dead on. Nailed it.
Say, folks, how do you explain the Republican G.W. Bush getting a budget surplus from (D) Clinton in 2001, and then running up the highest budget deficit in U.S. history? Is that the Republican definition of “fiscal conservatism?” Smaller government? NOT under Bush & Cheney! U.S.A. Patriot Act! Talk about going towards a police state! Illegal wiretapping! Bush & Cheney authorized it. Two wars with countries that DID NOT attack us! Over 6,000 of our brave military KILLED and 10′s of 1,000′s wounded! As a Vietnam war veteran, I am extremely angry about that! YOU DON’T PUT TROOPS ON THE GROUND FOR YEARS AND ALLOW THE LOCALS TO ORGANIZE AGAINST YOU! AT least a TRILLION DOLLARS WASTED ON THOSE WARS!
BTW, I’m glad Prez Obama got binLaden, but I am angry he hasn’t brought our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan. I agree 100% with many of the things in the large post above and I’m a Democrat! I was stationed in Germany for two years during the Vietnam war. WWII has been over since 1945, yet the U.S. still has a lot of troops in Germany! WHY? Ditto Japan and a hundred other countries. Just imagine the cost! He’s right—-bring them home!
The sad truth: Both the Republican and Democratic parties have been corrupted by lobbyists! The pension he mentioned above for people serving in Congress is a giant slap in the face to U.S. citizens. The fact that Congress has separate health care coverage is a slap in the face to U.S. citizens. The fact that Congess can vote itself raises is a giant slap in the face! The U.S. Supreme Court, loaded with Republicans, voted to make corporations “people.” ALL OF YOU REPUBLICANS should be up in arms! Washington, Jefferson and President Eisenhower (the last honest Republican pres.) WARNED about the power of corporations and how that power could destroy our democracy! Eisenhower called it the MIC–Military-Industrial Complex—and he was right! So, the Republican-appointed REPUBLICAN Supreme Court “justices” made corporations “people” and gave them the right of UNLIMITED donations to political campaigns! Goodbye fair elections! AND, he’s absolutely right about the IRS. There should be a flat tax and NO ONE should be able to hide their incomes in foreign banks, like the Cayman Islands and Switzerland. WE will never see a flat tax because the Ultra-Rich in our country (top 5 percent) will never allow it to become law. They have bought and paid for Congress and they always get their way! The Middle-class and Poor suffer! May I remind you that it was the Ultra-Rich Republican factory owners who shipped the U.S. jobs to places like Mexico and China—-it wasn’t Joe Average! AND, you should be screaming about giant corps. like GE paying ZERO federal taxes! They did it by hiding their income overseas. It’s no wonder “we’re broke”—as he says.
